Mürren Mountain View Trail: Allmendhubel to Grütschalp — A Local's Guide
The Mountain View Trail above Mürren, from Allmendhubel down to Grütschalp — the easiest direction, how long it takes, how to get back, and why the views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are some of the best in the region.

If you want one walk above Mürren with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in front of you the whole way, the Mountain View Trail is a beautiful choice.
The trick is to walk it in the right direction. Take the funicular up to Allmendhubel and walk down to Grütschalp — mostly downhill, with the big peaks filling the view almost every step of the way.
At a glance
- Route: Allmendhubel → Grütschalp (the easier direction)
- Distance: about 5 km
- Time: about 1.5–2 hours, plus stops
- Climb: mostly downhill, about 500 m down with a few short ups
- Difficulty: easy to moderate mountain path
- Season: summer, when the snow has gone and the Allmendhubel funicular is running
Walking the other way, from Grütschalp up to Allmendhubel, is a proper uphill hike — about 500 m of climbing and 2 hours or more. Lovely if you want a workout, but not the relaxed walk most people are looking for.
Getting to the start
- Walk through Mürren to the Allmendhubel funicular station — about 5 minutes from the village centre.
- Ride the vintage funicular up to Allmendhubel (about 4 minutes).
- Step out at the top and follow the signs for the Mountain View Trail towards Grütschalp.
The funicular isn't covered by every travel pass, so check your ticket. It closes for maintenance for a few weeks in spring and autumn.
The walk
From Allmendhubel, the trail heads along the mountainside towards Grütschalp, through open alpine meadows, past grazing cows and into patches of light forest. In early summer the meadows are full of wildflowers, and if you're quiet you might spot a marmot or two.
The whole way, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau sit right across the valley from you. It's one of those walks where you keep stopping for photos — and that's completely fine. There's a lovely picnic spot along the way, too.

The path is a mountain path, not a flat stroll: it's uneven in places and some sections are steeper, so wear proper walking shoes.
Getting back
At Grütschalp you have two easy options:
- Take the mountain train back to Mürren — about 15 minutes along the cliff, with more stunning views.
- Take the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen if you're heading on somewhere else.
Good to know
- Bring: walking shoes with good grip, water and a snack, a light jacket (it can be breezy) and sun protection.
- Best time of day: the morning — it's quieter, and the peaks are usually clearest before the afternoon clouds.
- With kids: great for children who are happy walking an hour or two. For little ones, the shorter Allmendhubel Flower Trail and playground at the top are a better fit.
- Make it a picnic: take a Fondue Picnic Backpack and have a Swiss fondue in the meadows with the Eiger in front of you.
- Not in winter: this is a summer trail — don't assume it's open or safe in snow.
