Things to Do in Mürren, Switzerland: A Local's Guide for Summer and Winter
The best things to do in Mürren in summer and winter — hikes, Schilthorn, via ferrata, paragliding, snowshoeing, sledding and more, from a local guide who lives in the village.

Mürren is tiny. You can walk from one end of the village to the other in about ten minutes. But don't let that fool you — there's enough up here to fill a week, in any season.
I've lived here since 2016, and these are the things I tell every guest who asks, "What should we do while we're here?"
Summer in Mürren (June to October)
Walk the North Face Trail
If you only do one thing in Mürren, make it this. The trail follows the cliff edge with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau right across the valley, through flower meadows and past waterfalls. It's beginner friendly and mostly downhill. Read my complete North Face Trail guide, or join me on a guided hike — I'll take you past the Sprutz waterfall, where the path goes right behind the falling water.

Ride up to Allmendhubel
The little vintage funicular from the village takes you up to Allmendhubel in a few minutes. At the top you'll find the flower trail, a wonderful mountain playground for kids, and a terrace restaurant with a view you won't forget. Perfect for families or a gentler day.
Go up the Schilthorn
Two cable cars take you from Mürren to the 2,970 m summit, home of the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and the James Bond exhibition. On a clear day you can see up to 200 peaks. On the way, stop at Birg for the Thrill Walk — a path bolted to the cliff with glass floors and a sheer drop beneath your feet. Go early: clouds tend to build in the afternoon.
Do the via ferrata
The Mürren–Gimmelwald via ferrata is one of the most dramatic cliff routes in Switzerland — iron rungs, a tightrope-style cable crossing and the famous Nepal bridge, all hundreds of metres above the valley. You'll need fitness and a head for heights. Everything you need to know is in my via ferrata guide.

Climb Bryndli
Mürren's local peak. It's a steady climb with a short, steep final section, and a 360° view at the top that will ruin every other viewpoint for you. One of my personal favourites.

Find the hidden spots
- Grauseeli — a quiet turquoise lake just below the Schilthorn that most people ride straight past. Bring your swimmers if you're brave.
- Chilchbalm — a gentle valley walk from Gimmelwald to a huge natural amphitheatre of rock walls and waterfalls. My go-to on a cloudy day.
- Gimmelwald — walk 30–45 minutes downhill to one of the most authentic little villages in the Alps. Don't miss the honesty shop.
Fly
Mürren is one of the best places in Switzerland to paraglide. With Hike & Fly, you hike up with a professional tandem pilot, enjoy the view from the top, then fly back down over the Lauterbrunnen Valley. No experience needed — just a sense of adventure.

Ride an e-bike up to the village
On my Up to My Village tour we start in Lauterbrunnen and ride up through meadows and farms to Mürren, with a coffee stop at my favourite café on the way. The e-bike does the hard work — you just enjoy the views.
Have lunch at a mountain hut
Hike to the Rotstockhütte for a proper mountain lunch on a sunny terrace, or go one step further and spend the night — sleeping overnight in a mountain hut is one of the most special things you can do in the Alps.
Have a fondue picnic
Grab a Fondue Picnic Backpack — everything for a Swiss fondue for two, packed and ready to carry — and find your own spot in the meadows with the Eiger in front of you.
Winter in Mürren (December to March)
In winter, Mürren turns into a snow-globe village. The cars still stay away, the chalets are dusted with snow, and everything gets even quieter.
Ski from the village
Mürren is part of the Jungfrau Ski Region, and you can ski right from the village. Every January, the village hosts the Inferno — one of the oldest and longest amateur ski races in the world. It's a fantastic atmosphere even if you're only watching.
Go snowshoeing
No experience needed — if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Go snowshoeing with a local guide through snowy forests and open slopes above the village, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau across the valley. If the snow isn't right, we go on a guided winter walk instead.
Sledding and fondue
Two of my favourite winter days: Sled & Fondue, with a snowy walk, a cheese fondue lunch in a mountain hut and a sled ride back down; and night sledding, a headlamp-lit forest descent from the valley. Both are a lot of fun for families, couples and friends.
Take a winter walk
Prepared winter paths run from Mürren towards Allmendhubel and Winteregg, with the mountains glowing in the winter sun. Bring good boots and stop for a hot chocolate on the way.
On a rainy day
Mountain weather changes fast. If the clouds come in:
- Walk to Chilchbalm — the forest keeps you sheltered and the waterfalls are even louder in the rain.
- Head down to the valley to see the Trümmelbach Falls, ten glacier waterfalls inside the mountain (open from early April to early November).
- Visit the Mürren Sports Centre — swimming pool, spa and, in winter, curling and ice skating.
- Settle in at a café and watch the clouds roll through the valley. Honestly, it's beautiful too.
