My favourite places to eat in Mürren — the best coffee in the village, lunch at the historic Mürren Palace, cosy Swiss dinners, a James Bond brunch on the Schilthorn and proper mountain hut lunches.

Where to Eat in Mürren: A Local's Honest Guide

"Where should we eat in Mürren?" It's one of the questions I get asked most. Fair enough — it's a tiny village with a handful of places, so choosing well makes a big difference.

I've lived here since 2016 and eaten at every one of these spots more times than I can count. These are my honest picks.

1. Insport Coffee Bar — my number one

If I could only recommend one place in Mürren, this is it.

They make Aussie-style coffee in the Swiss Alps — proper flat whites, long blacks and espresso done right. If you know, you know. Not a coffee person? The matcha lattes and protein smoothies are perfect fuel before or after a hike.

But the real star is the toasted sandwiches. Perfectly crispy, generously filled, made fresh — the best toasties I've found anywhere in the mountains. It's relaxed, friendly, and it's where the locals actually go. I'm in there several times a week.

Best for: coffee, toasties, smoothies, pre- and post-hike fuel
Vibe: casual, local favourite, quick

2. Mürren Palace — history, style and the best burger in the village

The Palace has stood at the highest point of Mürren's mountain terrace since 1874, and it's known as Switzerland's very first palace hotel. In the early 1900s, when downhill skiing was just being invented right here in Mürren, it hosted skiers from all over Europe. After years of standing empty, it reopened in December 2024 after a beautiful renovation — and it's become one of my favourite places in the village.

For lunch, head to the Palace Corner — the relaxed bar and bistro with a sunny terrace. My go-to is the pulled beef burger. Every time. For a special dinner, book a table in the Palace Hall, the grand historic dining room that's been lovingly restored with its original features — you can feel 150 years of mountain history around you.

It's elegant without being stuffy. As the Palace puts it themselves: "It's a Palace but not too Palace."

Best for: lunch on the terrace, a special dinner, a cocktail with history
Vibe: historic, stylish, relaxed

3. Eiger Guesthouse — cosy and good value

One of my favourite spots in the village. It's cosy, affordable and genuinely welcoming — the kind of place where you walk in and immediately feel at home. The staff are lovely, and the food is great without breaking the bank. There's a little outdoor seating, but it's the warm atmosphere inside that keeps people coming back.

Best for: relaxed dinners, good food at fair prices
Vibe: cosy, friendly, feel-at-home

4. Eiger Restaurant — dinner with a view

At Hotel Eiger, the Eiger Restaurant has huge panoramic windows looking straight out to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau — the kind of view that makes you forget about your food for a minute. Refined Swiss and international dishes in an elegant setting. Book it for a special evening.

Best for: special occasions, date night
Vibe: elegant, panoramic

5. Stägerstübli — the village pub

This is where the locals go for a beer after work. Nothing fancy — just honest food and generous portions: rösti, schnitzel, hearty Swiss classics and good pizza. If you want to feel like part of the village for an evening, pull up a stool at Stäger's.

Best for: traditional Swiss food, a cold beer
Vibe: pub, locals' hangout

6. Panorama Restaurant Allmendhubel — lunch with the kids

Ride the funicular up to Allmendhubel and have lunch on the big sunny terrace, right next to the playground. Rösti, sausages, cheese platters, homemade cakes and ice cream — and the kids can keep playing while you finish your coffee. Open in the summer and winter seasons.

Best for: family lunches, a terrace with a view
Vibe: relaxed, sunny, family-friendly

7. Piz Gloria — brunch at 2,970 metres

One of the most unique breakfasts in Switzerland. The revolving restaurant on top of the Schilthorn serves a famous James Bond Brunch — fresh breads, local cheeses, eggs, pastries and Swiss specialties, while the room slowly turns and up to 200 peaks drift past the window.

It's a short cable car ride up from Mürren. You can buy combined brunch-and-cable-car packages, but a brunch booking on its own doesn't include the ride, so check what you're buying. Book ahead — it's popular for good reason.

Best for: a once-in-a-lifetime breakfast
Vibe: panoramic, iconic, Bond-level dramatic

8. Mountain huts on the trail

This is the real Alpine experience — no tablecloths, just honest food on a sunny terrace and views you've earned.

  • Schilthornhütte (2,432 m) — about two hours' hike above Mürren. Hearty soups, rösti, sausages and apple strudel. Everything tastes better when you've walked for it. Want company? Hike up to the Schilthornhütte with me on the way to the summit.
  • Pension Suppenalp — right on the North Face Trail, perfect for a coffee or a homemade lunch.
  • Schiltalp — a working dairy farm on the trail where you can buy fresh alpine cheese and snacks.

Huts are open in summer, and opening times depend on the weather, so always carry some food of your own.

Or bring your own

My favourite lunch of all? A fondue in a flower meadow with the Eiger in front of you. Grab a Fondue Picnic Backpack — everything for a Swiss fondue for two, ready to carry. In winter, try Sled & Fondue: a snowy walk, cheese fondue in a mountain hut and a sled ride back down.

Quick tips

  • Book dinner ahead. Mürren is small and restaurants fill up, especially in summer and the ski season. Don't expect to walk in at 7pm.
  • Lunch is easier. Most places have room at lunchtime, so that's the time to be spontaneous.
  • Budget for Swiss prices. Around CHF 25–40 for a main course, more for a sit-down dinner.
  • Check seasonal closures. Some restaurants close for a few weeks in spring and autumn.
  • Don't skip Insport. Even if you're not a coffee person — go for the toasties.
