Grauseeli Lake
A hidden alpine lake sitting just below the Schilthorn at 2,513m — almost completely off the tourist radar. Most visitors ride the cable car straight past it to the summit. You'll hike to it and have it nearly to yourself. There are two approaches from Mürren on foot: through the Schiltalp valley and over the Wassenegg — or via the Engetal on the other side, where you can stop at the Schilthornhütte for lunch or snacks along the way. For an easier option, take the cable car from Mürren to Birg (2,677m) and hike down to the lake — about 30–40 minutes. From the lake you can continue upward to the Schilthorn summit at 2,970m for a truly epic full day.
Highlight
The lake itself — turquoise, still and surrounded by towering mountain walls. One of the most beautiful hidden spots in the region.
Laura's Tip
Combine with the Schilthorn summit for an unforgettable full day out. Hike to Grauseeli, push on to the top, then take the cable car back down to Mürren. And if you're game enough, it's really nice to swim in the lake — so bring your swimmers and a towel!
Start
Mürren village centre (full hike) or Birg cable car station (easier option)
Getting There
Full hike — follow signs from Mürren towards Schiltalp and Grauseeli. Easier option — purchase a cable car ticket from Mürren to Birg at the Schilthorn Bahn station.
