The best winter walks around Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley, no skis needed. Easy, groomed trails with Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau views, from a local guide.

Winter Walks Around Mürren: No Skis Needed

Coming to Mürren with a skier, but you don't ski yourself? Good news: some of the best views up here are from the winter walking trails. They're groomed, signposted with pink markers and easy enough for normal winter boots. Here are my favourites.

1. Grütschalp to Mürren via Winteregg

About 4.5 km · 1.5 hours · easy

If you only do one winter walk, make it this one. Take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen up to Grütschalp and follow the trail along the railway line to Mürren. It's almost flat, and you have the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in front of you the whole way.

Halfway, stop at the restaurant at Winteregg, grab a blanket and a hot drink on the terrace.

Pick your version:

WalkDistanceTimeDifficulty
Grütschalp → Wintereggabout 2.5 kmabout 50 mineasy, almost flat
Winteregg → Mürrenabout 2 kmabout 40 mineasy, gently uphill
Grütschalp → Mürren (the full walk)about 4.5 kmabout 1 h 30easy, around 150 m of gentle climbing
Mürren → Grütschalp (reverse)about 4.5 kmabout 1 h 30easy, mostly gently downhill

Getting back is easy: the little Mürren train runs along the same line and stops at Grütschalp, Winteregg and Mürren. So you can walk one way and ride back, or walk just to Winteregg and catch the train from there. From Grütschalp, the cable car takes you back down to Lauterbrunnen.

Local tip: walk it towards Mürren, so the mountains are ahead of you rather than behind.

2. Mürren to Allmendhubel

About 1 hour up · 45 minutes down · easy to moderate

A groomed trail climbs from the village to Allmendhubel, Mürren's little local mountain. At the top there's a panorama restaurant with a big sun terrace. Walk up, have lunch, then walk down, or take the funicular one way. The sledding run is on a separate path, so you won't have sleds flying past you.

3. Gimmelwald to Mürren

About 1 hour uphill · moderate

The road between tiny Gimmelwald and Mürren turns into a winter walking path (and a sledding run) once the snow comes. It zigzags up with lovely views down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Take the cable car from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald and walk up, or walk down and ride the cable car back. Keep an eye out for sleds coming down.

4. Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg along the valley floor

About 7 km · 2 hours · easy and flat

For a grey day, or when the higher trails are snowed in, walk along the bottom of the valley past frozen waterfalls and the river. Fun fact: around the shortest day, the sun only reaches the valley floor for about an hour. It's cold down there, but the icy cliffs are beautiful. Trümmelbach Falls is closed in winter, so don't plan around it. Bus back to Lauterbrunnen from Stechelberg.

5. Want something wilder? Try snowshoeing

There's a signposted snowshoe trail from Mürren via Chänelegg to Allmendhubel (around 90 minutes), quieter and deeper in the snow than the walking paths.

What to wear for winter walks

  • Winter boots with good grip. Normal trainers won't cut it.
  • Spikes or microspikes after fresh snow or when it's icy. You can buy them at Intersport Mürren.
  • Layers, a hat, gloves and sunglasses. The sun on snow is strong, even when it's cold.
  • Poles if you have them, especially for the downhill bits.

Before you go

Check which trails are open on the Jungfrau Region or Mürren tourism website. Conditions change after big snowfalls, and some paths close for a day or two while they're groomed. Days are short in winter too, so start walks before early afternoon.
