How to Get to Mürren (2027): Routes from Interlaken & Lauterbrunnen
The two ways up to car-free Mürren, explained by a guide who lives there. Train, cable car, parking, luggage and the one tip most visitors miss.
There's a moment, somewhere between the cable car doors sliding open and your first breath of mountain air, when you realise Mürren isn't like anywhere else. No cars. No traffic noise. Just the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau spread out in front of you like a painting that's almost too good to be real.
I've lived in Mürren since 2016, and I still love the trip up. People message me every week asking how to get here, so here's everything I tell my guests — the simple version first, then the details.
The short answer
Mürren sits at 1,650 metres on a cliff-edge terrace above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and you can't drive into the village. Everyone arrives by cable car, and that's half the fun.
- From Lauterbrunnen: cable car to Grütschalp (about 4 minutes), then the little mountain train along the cliff to Mürren (about 15 minutes).
- From Stechelberg: the Schilthornbahn cableway straight up to Mürren (about 4 minutes).
- From Interlaken: allow 45–60 minutes door to door.

Step 1: Get to the valley
Your first goal is Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg, at the bottom of the cliff.
By train: Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen takes around 20 minutes and trains run regularly. From Zurich it's about 2.5 hours, from Bern about 1.5 hours and from Geneva about 3 hours, all changing at Interlaken. Download the SBB Mobile app before you travel — it covers trains, buses and cable cars in one place, and it's the easiest way to check connections on the day.
By car: park in the valley and leave the car behind. Lauterbrunnen has a covered multi-storey car park right next to the station and cable car. Stechelberg has an open-air car park at the Schilthornbahn valley station. Both are paid, both take cards, and both allow overnight parking.
Step 2: Choose your way up
Here's the tip most visitors miss: the two routes arrive at opposite ends of the village. It's only a 7–10 minute walk between them, but with a suitcase you'll want to arrive at the right end. Check where your hotel is before you choose.
Route A: Lauterbrunnen → Grütschalp → Mürren (north end of the village)
This is my favourite for first-timers. The cable car lifts you straight up the cliff to Grütschalp, then a tiny train trundles along the mountainside to Mürren with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau filling the windows the whole way. Sit on the left-hand side. Trust me.
Route B: Stechelberg → Mürren (south end of the village)
Take the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, then the Schilthornbahn cableway up past waterfalls and sheer rock walls — dramatic doesn't quite cover it. The direct cabin takes about 4 minutes. If you're not in a hurry, the route via Gimmelwald lets you stop in one of the sweetest little villages in the valley.
Travelling with luggage?
The cable cars and the mountain train handle suitcases easily. If you're travelling by Swiss rail, you can also send your luggage ahead and travel hands-free.
Once you arrive, call Stäger Transport — they'll meet you at the station and take your bags to your accommodation. It's a wonderful local service, especially with heavy bags.

Tickets and passes
The Swiss Travel Pass covers both routes up to Mürren. If you don't have a pass, buy a through ticket to Mürren in the SBB app. Timetables change in spring and autumn when lifts close for maintenance, so check your travel date in the SBB app before you go — especially the last connection back down.

For most people, Lauterbrunnen → Grütschalp → Mürren. It starts right at Lauterbrunnen station, so there's no bus to catch.
Is Mürren open all year?
Yes. Summer is for hiking, winter for skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. Some lifts close for a few weeks in spring and autumn, so always check ahead.
Can I bring a pushchair or wheelchair?
Yes! Both routes up are step-free, and the main village street in Mürren is wide and easy to get around. A few side paths are steeper, so if you have specific access needs, message me and I'll point you in the right direction.
